I am an emerging artist (and hospice nurse) residing in Brooklyn, NY. I spent my childhood exploring the wild marshes and waterways of Orient Point, NY and currently live a short walk away from the ocean and the Salt Marsh in Marine Park, Brooklyn, NY. Walking in the marsh in all seasons, and weather provides endless joy and inspiration, and widens my circle of empathy for this delicate planet. It’s often easy to forget that highways and roadways, airports and large shopping centers sit on the outskirts of these fragile wetlands which protect us and provide us with endless beauty.
I seek to capture the visual impression of shifting light and color and other sensory aspects of a scene like warmth or chilly air, sound, atmosphere, and movement as I paint a particular spot in time. I sometimes work quickly to capture fleeting moments and my rapid brushstrokes convey my excitement and energy as the light and sky shifts. I seek to convey how vast a space can be, how ephemeral and beautiful each moment is, and what a place, what these moments evoke in us-- grief, loneliness, gratitude, despair, belonging, or hope.
I am self-taught, so my pieces—from paintings, drawings, collages and weavings-- are guided by intuition and emotion, internal dialogue and story-telling. I am drawn to exploration, experimentation and creation through mark-making, scribbling, etching, tearing, layering, and assemblage, and am intrigued by the possibilities of structure and arrangement.
Working with patients and families who have selected comfort measures at end of life also deeply informs my creative life and works. Their stories become woven into my own, which allows me to see things simply, quietly, expansively.
